Create Through the Chaos

This past week was not as calm as I was planning, but, as is life. Last week I said I was going to find something everyday to be inspired by. While I’m sure there was something everyday that I could have drawn from, I completely forgot to write them down (oops). HOWEVER, I did remember to write down a few, and a few is better than none. Namely; I saw a really cute squirrel, braided my grandmothers hair, and zoned out really hard while I was at work (as a barrrrista). While I think the most important component of getting your creative spark back is time, I did find this exercise to help a bit. I think it puts you in a very open minded headspace. When you’re looking for all the small details and pockets of time, they start popping out at you, and they are endless. I definitely could start to feel the creative canals of my mind opening.

Sometimes though, all it takes is one thing. One book, one movie, one song. For me, it was my recent dive into folk music. Specifically, folk music written by women. I was listening to a very broad, general folk playlist while I was walking home the other day, and in passing I thought of the line “Old, oxidized soul, time has and has not been kind. In the heat of July, it has and has not been exactly as I imagined” I wrote it down in my notes app. That night I wrote my first song since April. I want you to know that this didn’t feel like a huge rush of passion and inspiration. I thought, oh that’s not half bad, and wrote it down. I knew I was going to mess around with it when I got home, but I didn’t pick up my guitar until 8 pm. The song isn’t done yet –I still need to write the bridge– but I’m really happy with how it’s coming along.

I am going to continue to do that same exercise I mentioned last week because I really feel like it’s helping. I’m gonna drop a little excerpt of one of the small moments I wrote about while doing my exercise over the last week below this paragraph. It’s nothing crazy, Im not a very experienced writer (as you maybe can tell) but honestly I think I prefer when things aren’t super polished. I feel like when things are overly neat and edited, it loses a bit of its humanity. Plus, this is all for fun.

The constant, dull hum of the industrial fridge numbs my mind while I stand under the fluorescent lights. Im staring at the small circular stickers we use to date out food products. I have to look longer than I should because I can’t sort out what day it is. I start to zone out as Harry Styles’ latest radio hit loops in my head.

it’s Wednesday.

Hey ALSO, if you guys have any suggestions for folk songs/albums/artists I should check out, pretty please send them my way! I love finding new music to listen to 🙂
