The Art of Starting
Starting, that’s the hard part. I’m still not entirely sure how to do it, but this is me trying. I found myself thinking this morning about how I wish I could write. I wish I could write things that other people want to read. I wish I were more academic, that my brain naturally worked in that way. I lean more creative. My brain works in flashes of curiosity and inspiration. Never steady enough to grab ahold of. This is me trying to hold on to one idea and see it through. Now, full transparency, this is not the first time I’ve tried to do that. I tend to lose interest in things fairly quickly. If someone’s reading this now, I’ve made it further into this project than I thought I would.
I think what caused this new desire was a video I saw of this woman sharing the book her husband had written for her as a wedding gift. A real, cover to cover book he had written just for her. Not to be mass produced and read by millions, just a book he created for personal use. That’s what inspires me most these days. People who are creating just to create. Not for fame or money, for fun. To express themselves. I guess that’s ironic considering the whole purpose of a blog is to be read by other people. But this is me stumbling through the art of starting, and I’m posting on here about so maybe you can do it with me. It’s easier sometimes to do something new when you’re not doing it alone.
I don’t have a clear plan of what I want to do moving forward. I think this is the block in the road I always reach. It’s hard to move forward with something when you don’t know where you want to take it. That’s what always stops me from starting. So I’m writing this here with no clear plan of where I want to take it. I don’t even really know what I’m trying to start, but I know that this feels like a step in the right direction. What I do know, is that I want to create more. I make a lot of things. Things with physical purpose; skirts, necklaces, jewelry, bags, things like that. While those are all things that I created, it feels different to me than what I’m looking for. I want to paint more, draw, play guitar, sing, write. These forms of creativity feel different to me, more vulnerable. I plan on hopefully putting this up on a cute website I’ve made (haha). I plan on writing more. I’m not sure what about, but it’s a start, and that’s what I’m going for.
